Flesh and Bone features recent works of Los Angeles painter Julia Schwartz. The exhibit dynamically ties together several of Schwartz’s earlier artistic explorations with themes of mortality and the human condition. Intentionally ambiguous visceral works have been painted equally with her hands, brush and pallet knife. The spaces between objects and backgrounds in her work hold unexpected narratives and journeys often as important as the figures themselves.
“…Her subtle but saturated palette of pure pigment dried to a thick, earthen, frosting-like crust, follows an internal logic rather than conforming to Nature, but does not exist entirely outside of it. Yellow-infused grays, polluted pinks, crisp mints, ironic lavenders… every square centimeter of canvas is covered in varying thicknesses of pigment, and upon inspection even the distant whites reveal densely detailed pockets of color and shape, the pictorial space often reads as empty… Expressing a sanguine comfort with ambiguity, perhaps due to her other career in psychoanalysis, her work gives one pause, but ultimately gives nothing away…” - Shana Nys Dambrot (from catalog essay).
